Sophie Jaques will go down in history as one of the best defensemen in NCAA women's ice hockey history. During the 2021-22 season, she led the 2022 national champion Ohio State Buckeyes with 59 points. Along the way to her program-record single-season points by a defenseman, Jaques paced the team with 11 power play goals, good for second nationally. She also played a key part in the Buckeyes' nation-leading .921 penalty kill and power play percentage (.379) that year. The Toronto, Ont. native was named the 2022 WCHA Final Faceoff MVP after scoring both the game-tying and game-winning goals to help the Buckeyes win their second conference championship in three seasons. She went on to earn all-tournament honors at the 2022 Frozen Four.
Jaques' season point total is good for the second-most single season points by a true defenseman in Division I women’s collegiate hockey. Her 59 points are also the most by a blueliner in 20 years. She also finished the year with a +51 on-ice rating and a team-high 44 blocked shots. Her success on the ice earned her the WCHA's Defender of the Year award and first-team All-America honors. She was also named the USCHO.com Player of the Year.
Off the ice, Jaques is an incredibly accomplished scholar. A 2022 Ohio State graduate with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, she earned a fellowship to continue her studies at Ohio State and is currently pursing a master's degree in civil engineering. The Toronto, Ont. native finished her undergrad with a 3.75 GPA and served as a research and teaching assistant in the College of Engineering. Jaques also serves with the 2nd & 7 Foundation and is the vice president of SHEROs, an organization that provides a safe space for minority student-athletes and aims to promote diversity in sport. Last season she was named the WCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year and became Ohio State's first recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar of the Year award.
As a result of her incredible accomplishments both in sport and as a student, she was named Ohio State's first top-three finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, the highest award in collegiate women's hockey.
Jaques is now playing her fifth season for the Ohio State women's hockey team. She already leads the team in power play scoring and has earned conference player of the week honors for the 10th time in her career.
